Gibraltar goes to the polls - December 8

Maybe a few days old, but for those of you that don't already know...

Peter Caruana, the leader of the Gibraltar Social Democrats, yesterday ended weeks of frenzied speculation and called a general election for December 8th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

At 4.45pm Mr Caruana, who at that point was still formally Chief Minister, walked into the Convent and informed the Governor of the election date.

Mr Caruana, who was accompanied by acting Chief Secretary Richard Armstrong, then asked the Governor to formally dissolve Parliament.

Mr Caruana, who now heads a caretaker government, called the election shortly after presenting the list of 10 candidates who will seek to achieve a fifth consecutive electoral win for the GSD.

The slate included four new candidates but excluded Fabian Vinet, who has served as a minister for eight years but was not selected to stand by the party executive.
